'Upper Peninsula Animal Wefare Shelter' (formerly Marquette County Humane Society) Joie's time with us as her foster family has been a delight and a pleasure. Joie is a special girl and she'll need a special human who can see past her tough outer shell to the sweet, happy dog she is underneath. It might take more than one visit to see her true personality, but she is worth the effort. It breaks my heart to not be able to be her forever home ourselves, as we have fallen hopelessly in love with her, but we cannot for reasons that have nothing to do with her. I have enjoyed watching her blossom, and I know there is someone out there for her! Joie is sweet and funny and playful and loving. She 'talks' to you, with her little butt wiggling, when she's trying to tell you something. She gently paws at your arm when she wants petted. She brings the knotted rope and pushes it into your hand, or sets it on my other pup's head, when she wants to play. She lays her head in your lap when she wants some love. In the afternoon, she waits by the window for my husband to get home and then meets him at the gate, practically wagging herself in half because she's so happy that he's home. She is leery of strangers and puts up a tough-dog front, but once she's had some time to accept someone, she's excited for them to come visit again. When my daughter drops by, Joie can hardly contain herself, she's so happy to have company. Though it took her a long time, she's finally decided that the cats aren't very interesting after all, and in the evening, when she's tucked up next to me on the couch, there's usually a cat or two curled up right next to her head. She is quite the character, 'stealing' the other dogs toys when they aren't looking and then racing away with them waiting for the chase. She loves to play tug of war and fetch, and, in my experience with her, while she's rambunctious and energetic while playing with my dogs, when my old boy has had enough and gives his little warning growl, Joie backs right off and goes to find something else to do. No fuss about it. Joie is crate trained and mostly housebroken, only having the occasional potty accident if I've left her home alone for too long and didn't kennel her before I left, which is more my fault than hers! She is mostly well behaved; doesn't bark needlessly or chew inappropriate things or scratch at stuff. She sleeps quietly all night. She'll steal a snack out of the garbage if I don't put the lid down and it's sitting right there on top tempting her, but she won't knock it over or dig through it or anything like that. We've spent almost 3 months with Joie now so I'm confident in telling everybody what a wonderful dog she is. What you see on that first meeting is nothing but a show.
